Experience The Power Of Science
The advent of topically
delivered minoxidil (Rogaine) in the early to mid 1980's demonstrated
for the first time that pharmacological treatment of pattern hair loss
was a viable option. In the early 1990's the development of orally
administered finasteride (Propecia) showed that a systemically focused
5AR (5-alpha reductase) blockade was also a realistic target for the
purpose of arresting hair loss. Importantly, this drug established a
basis for the systemic use of a 5AR inhibitor against pattern hair
loss. You may recall that 5AR has been strongly implicated in
precipitating the hormonal processes linked to pattern hair loss also
known as androgenetic alopecia (AGA).
The next evolutionary
step in this process was our recognition that botanically derived
molecules may offer a number of compelling advantages over
pharmaceutically based alternatives. In fact, we were the first to
market botanically based hair loss treatment formulations beginning in
1996. In the past several years a great deal of research has been
directed toward the examination of a number of naturally educed
substances, specifically those which have shown the ability to inhibit
5AR. The most widely researched substance of this kind is the
liposterolic extract of saw palmetto (LSESr). Historically, this
botanical earned an excellent track record of success against BPH
(benign prostatic hyperplasia), a prostate disorder linked with the same
metabolic changes evident in AGA.
Noted researchers tested
this substance against pharmaceutical compounds such as minoxidil and
finasteride (ref). They found that it compared very favorably in a
number of relevant lab assays, particularly those involving the
inhibition of 5AR. In one research study it was shown that LSESr was a
3-fold more efficient inhibitor of this problematic enzyme than the drug
finasteride.
Recently, newly
recognized botanicals such as grape seed extract, borage oil, evening
primrose oil, and others, have also shown promising activity against the
changes associated with AGA. It is our hypothesis that a number of these
botanical tools may offer greater efficacy when combined together, in
contrast to any one substance utilized alone.
In our laboratory, we
have advanced this early research in several ways. Now, we have
developed a new generation of oral and topical formulas based heavily
around these novel extracts. Further, we have examined one new
generation formula in particular in a placebo-controlled, double-blind
clinical trial. A manuscript detailing results from this study has been
submitted for publication within a peer-reviewed scientific journal and
is currently under editorial review. We continue to examine novel
botanical molecules in an effort to harness them as new weapons against
AGA.
Botanicals offer a
powerful set of tools in the treatment of pattern hair loss. In the
coming years ahead, we may anticipate the development of ever more
efficacious treatment options based on this paradigm. Our goal is to
continue to provide our valued clients with the most scientifically
advanced product line to combat hair loss.
